Description of Works
Tom Blackwell Contractors & Plant Hire Limited were employed as earthworks sub contractor by J Breheny Contractors to undertake cut to fill excavation to formation levels, placement of 500mm sand sub base layer followed by placement of 500mm of Bentonite enriched soils as part of the wider project constructing Phase 4B (New Landfill Cell)

Project involved works being complete over the winter months of 2008/09, many areas of the wider site and specifically lagoons directly adjacent to Phase 4B formed habitat for Great Crested Newts therefore in the wet winter months surface water management and potential runoff to these lagoons was critical, these issue were managed successfully by JBC and Tom Blackwell Contractors & Plant Hire Limited.
Due to the lack of suitable engineering clay and an abundance of sand within the site the lining system used was Bentonite Enriched soils, JBC batched the material and Tom Blackwell Contractors & Plant Hire Limited successfully placed the BES soils to create the required mineral barrier, placement of BES soils can be a fine balancing act with maintenance of correct moisture content and achieving required compaction levels difficult even in ideal conditions however Tom Blackwell Contractors & Plant Hire Limited extensive experience of the product and the use of GPS machine control to allow newly batched material to be placed, compacted, trimmed and then sealed up proving the key to this tricky winter time operation.
